Speedsurfing in first edition Water Safety Magazine 2011

Proud to announce speedsurfing is covered in the brand new Water Safety Magazine. After getting in touch with Tomas via LinkedIN we started to write the first article. My first 2011 action to promote windsurfing/ speedsurfing in a new group of readers.

You can directly check the article HERE

Does remind me to the Starboard facebook message some weeks ago: Chris Pressler promotes windsurfing. Do you? YES I do ;)

New event: ODYSSEY of Speed

Karpathos, Greece
02.08.2011 ? 21.08.2011

Notice of Race
The Event
As the event includes various disciplines (challenges) of speed/slalom surfing (see rules
below), the event is named as the  'Odyssey of Speed'; in the tradition of the ancient
greek hero Odysseus, who had several adventures to overcome.

The philosophy of this challenge should be to bring together people from around the world,
which enjoy the same passion of windsurfing in strong winds at high speeds. Therefore the
participation is open for everyone in the windsurfing community from all skill levels from
fun sailors up to serious including professional level.

The 'Odyssey of Speed' is dealing with various disciplines of speed/slalom surfing, rather
than focussing on max. speed only. This way we would like to attract also the 'normal'
Greek Summer windsurfers to get involved, who might be reluctant to compete on pure
and specialized speed events and/or who might not have the highly specialized
equipment.

In addition to the competition it is also most important just to have fun, enjoy the
windsurfing sessions and meet people after the sessions. Generally built relationships and help to grow the community of speed surfers.

The 'Odyssey of Speed' will  be based on current GPS-measuring standards and rules.
Due to generous sponsoring we will have (10) LOCOSYS BGT-31 GPS Units incl. waterproof  AQUAPAC cases  available on-site for renting at  no cost. We  also  have  attractive
offers available on-site for purchasing the GPS equipment. (see GPS Equipment below).

Location
The 'Odyssey of Speed' will take place on the island of Karpathos, Greece.
The island of Karpathos is famous for its steady and strong wind conditions in summer and
also well known from past World Cup events and championships in Speedsurfing. The
three bays of Afiartis named Paradise, Gun and Chicken Bay are the perfect location
offering various kinds of windsurfing conditions, plenty of space on the water and perfect
infrastructure at the various surf stations.

However, the event shall not depend on a certain location and venue, except sailing in the
waters of Karpathos.

Date
The 'Odyssey of Speed' will take place from the 02.08.2011 until 21.08.2011.

Rules
The Basic Rules of www.gps-speedsurfing.com Version 8.0 (ref. 1) apply.
Within the course of the event the following speed/slalom categories will be considered for
the ranking:

  •  Cat. A: 2 sec GPS max
  •  Cat. B: 5 x 10sec GPS average

  •  Cat. D: 500 m GPS max
  •  Cat. E:  Alpha Racing (500m)
  •  Cat. F:   Maximum Distance travelled during one day (24 hours)

Each session result needs to be uploaded  to  www.gps-speedsurfing.com using the
automatic upload function of the approved evaluation software (see ref.1. 8).  Multiple
sessions during a day are allowed (see ref.1 .11), however should be avoided. Session
uploads are possible until 21.08.2011. 18:00. Any session uploaded after this deadline can
not be considered for the ranking.

All GPS tracks needs to be available for verification by the event organization at all times.

Scoring / Results
Points will be awarded for the best performance in each category within each  calendar
week of the competition, with one (1) possible discard per category during the entire event.
For each calendar week of the event all competitors are awarded points equivalent to their
ranking position in each category, except the first place,  which is awarded 0.7 points.
Competitors who will not supply a result for a category in any week of the event or who are
disqualified score the points awarded to the last possible finishing position in that week.
The Overall ranking will be based the accumulated points out of all categories.
The updated daily results will be communicated  on www.gps-speedsurfing.com and in
the race office on-site in Karpathos.

I love this postcard. I got it at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. The artist in the truck is Ed Leeper. Ed calls himself a "serial" artist and is quoted as saying, "I'm really content with art work that takes a lot of time". He also likes to say, "I transform things people don't want into things people still don't want."

Here is another one of his pieces. Something else cool here, and a fascinating look at this Big Sur artist here.
Jay and I are heading to Big Sur next week with his parents - I'll keep my eye out for Mr. Leeper.

Past the Ides, ratio profiling.

A classic thunderbolt moment, his face, stunned, makes my face (I can feel it) look stunned. He looks driver side, passenger side, driver side, back seat, driver side, driver side. I can feel the heat rising under the blue collar, creeping up his neck. It was all going so well, what happened? His partner, rounding the supposedly broken tail light, flash light in hand (daylight be damned) and looked the other way: passenger side, driver side, passenger side, backseat, passenger side, etc. He exclaims "he, he's not wearing his seat belt!" As if to make up for something. This all hits me later in the shower of all places, I dry off laughing. We laugh together at the stupidity. Back on the street, he looks this way and that. He explains the back right tail light is not working properly. But this car is a piece of shit. There's Olde English lettering on the back window. She's Puerto Rican... or something. She was scurrying. He is stammering a little. He doesn't know what to do. We are blocking traffic. As I said, it is cold. Stupidly, insidiously cold. Doltishly cold. So my wife ran to the car from the grocer with her arms wrapped tight, hands in her pockets. My son's big head must have looked like an older person's normal head. This was the look on the cop's face. I say, no offer, pointing to the side street, "I can pull over there...." He nods. Almost gratefully. They take a long time to write out the summons. (Stammering, it seems) "uh, this is just a summons, it won't go on your record. You won't get any points." I nod. Now, in retrospect, I can feel the stupidity on my face; the unknowing, naive misunderstanding. They take forever to write the summons. In the time they are in the patrol car writing out the summons on the carbon paper, a friend walks by and laughs sympathetically at (or is it with) our predicament. The cop comes back. He twitches (a retrospective twitch, I have to admit) and mentions that the back light is sort of working now. Actually, it kind of goes in and out, it looks like it's not working and then it works again. It confused us. He mentions something about a dinner break, how he'll be at the precinct in an hour and if I drive by I can have him sign off on the summons. I don't understand. I mention that it's probably something to do with the wiring and how odd it is that it's out as I just had the car inspected. He gives me a funny look. I don't notice. I notice later, in the shower. He offers again to write off the summons in "an hour." I don't get it. I tell him I'll have to take care of it tomorrow because it's seven o'clock already and I have to get my kid to bed and what mechanic is open right now to fix it anyways? Another funny look. An "alright." We drive off. It's not until later, in the shower of all places.

Interview David Gollick about Windsurfingfins.co.uk

On facebook I saw www.windsurfingfins.co.uk and there are a lot of things going on last 12 months. Also received emails from speedsurfingblog.com readers with questions about the finshop. So it was about time for a interview about this new service!

Why did you Start Windsurfingfins.co.uk?
For years I struggled to get hold of high quality Windsurfing Fins, I found that most stores had a handful of old stock and were not knowledgeable enough in this area. On this basis I assumed that many other Windsurfing and Kitesurfers would have similar frustrations and Windsurfingfins.co.uk was born. Over the past 18 months we have worked hard to bring together 14 Fin Brands with a massive variety in price and design variation. Our web presence is now very strong and most searches for either product or brand will place us on the first page of Google worldwide. We have recently introduced our International Riders Team were a handful of experienced riders promote the importance of the Fin and are there for help and advise.

When I look at Windsurfingfins.co.uk there are many different fins for sale. How does it work and do you have most fins in stock?
Most of our popular Brands are in stock, although with so much choice it is hard to get it right all the time. We order fins all the time and if a customer wants a fin we do not have then normally it will arrive within a few days. Some Fins are custom made which take longer to arrive but this is stated at the outset of the order before the customer pays. Not all Brands are quick to respond to orders due to location or bad internet connections. We have close working relationships with all our contacts. We send both email and text messages to ensure that our orders are dealt with at the fastest pace.

Where do you deliver the Fins? Only UK, Europe or Worldwide?
We deliver our Fins all over the world, We have recently shipped a set of Deboichet Custom R16 Formula fins to the Seychelles and some Kite Racing fins to Brisbane ,Australia. There is no limit to our destination. The majority of our orders come from overseas, mostly Europe I think that the Euro is better prices against the pound most of the year so this tends to keep the order from abroad. The UK market is a little slower but building this year.

With so many fins it will be hard to choose. Can you give advice, is this based on personal experience or product information from the factory?
Personally I have been a competitive windsurfer for the past 30 years. Over that time I have been involved in the production of fins and along the way been exposed to influential people like Curtis Hesselgrave and others that are very technically minded. Practically I test a lot of fins in the majority of situations. If I do not have the conditions I ask a member of our team to test and report back. I have made available size charts where possible to give the purchaser a little input in the decision making process. Select-Hydrofoils are very good at this with their range of fins, and it is easy for a customer to look up his recommended fin size in a given design. A lot of clients ring me for a chat; we answer 7 days a week both during and outside of office hours. I generally find that there is a price point and then advise on a suitable Brand, Shape and size within this. Fins are a very personal choice and we all sail in a slightly different way, so it can be a little hard sometimes, but invariably the customer can decide and made a decision.

You told me about the close co-operation with Curtis. I already see 3 interesting fin designs which can only be found on your website, can you tell me ,more?
I was introduced to Curtis by Henry Szeto from Macro Polymer. A very highly educated individual with a Masters in Composites. We collectively design and produce Fins under both the ??Curtis Racing Fins?? and G-Fins Brand. Curtis was recovering from a stroke which was induced from an accident in a Karate class he was attending. We have worked together since then to produce a range of Slalom Fins made utilising a vacuum infusion process. They have been popular with the European market. Further to this Curtis has had various successes with his Kite speed fins made for Rob Douglas who produced 55.48 knots in Namibia Nov 2011. (See our Articles section). Taking this success further Curtis has collaborated with Kean Rogers to produce the ??Speedfire?? fin which is the latest in the line. All of the current Curtis fins can be made to order and are individually CNC machines in the USA from military grade G10.
